Have you ever wondered what it would be like to look in the mirror and see Luis Suárez staring back at you? Okay…bad example, but you see my point. The feeling of being a professional footballer, pulling on that jersey and stepping out onto the field to be adored and hated simultaneously. What a feeling that must be! Look me in the eye and tell me you wouldn’t want to sink your teeth into a situation like that (okay, I’m sorry. That’s the last Luis Suárez pun, I promise!).
Thursday (12th March 2015) was a groundbreaking date for football kit lovers everywhere as Nike unleashed its brand new team wear catalogue upon the world. The new catalogue is sporting some of the finest kits ever made, modeled by some of the finest players to ever exist; Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and David Luiz just to name a few (I bet you thought I was going to mention Mr Suarez here didn’t you).
Some of these kits will be worn from the very bottom of Sunday League football, all the way through to the Champions League knock out rounds (and no I’m not exaggerating!). That line would have worked even better if Manchester City could pull their act together in Europe because they’re one of the many teams to sport the new Nike Challenge Jersey (below).
Barcelona, Manchester City, Galatasaray and PSG are just a few of the teams around the world that are blessed with gracing the pitch in the Challenge Jersey. Here are some of the benefits that these teams will be gaining from this kit.
The jersey has:
- A stand up collar with a 2-button placket.
- A warp-knitmesh back panel for enhanced ventilation.
- Dri-Fit 100% Polyester fabric
The Challenge jersey also has trim down the side of it which is ‘designed to shine’, magnifying your performance which Nike has called a ‘Flash of Brilliance’ (a bit self-complimentary if you ask me).
This unique jersey is every bit as stylish as the man who’s wearing it in the picture above, (yes I know, Messi is stylish as well). It has the essence of a classic plain football kit with a discreet monochromatic chequered pattern fading downwards (on jacquard fabric) to give it a fashionable modern twist as you can see on the image below.
The Energy jersey boasts a number on unique aspects:
- V-neck collar with non-restrictive fit
- Full mesh back panel
- Jacquard fabric to create the subtle chequered pattern with a lightweight feel
- Dri-Fit 100% Polyester fabric.
- Available in most traditional football kit colours to suit your team.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, “the Energy jersey is nice and everything, but it’s TOO subtle. I want to stand out and be noticed on the pitch!” Well you’re in luck, because as it happens, Nike has predicted this, and designed something slightly bolder and more daring. Introducing….The Precision III Jersey.
It features a similar chequered design to the Energy Jersey however the Precision III Jersey has contrasting colours to make a bold statement and to stand out. After all, the tag line accompanying the new range is ‘Designed to Shine’, so these Jerseys need to stand out from the rest of the pack. I don’t know about you but I think they’ve strongly succeeded this ambition.
As you can see in the picture above, the Precision III jersey does come in several courageous colour schemes: Black / University Red, Pine Green / White, Midnight Navy / Laser Blue, University Red / White and University Gold / Royal Blue.
The last but (and as you probably predicted) by no means least ‘Flash Of Brilliance’ from Nike’s new range is the Sash jersey (featured below).
The Sash jersey aims to bring a certain elegance and class to the range (which is probably why it’s being modeled by the stylish Frenchman Blaise Matuidi himself!). And I personally believe that the Sash jersey is the most delicately designed jersey out of the whole range.
Of course beauty is always in the eye of the beholder and some people may prefer the other jersey’s, but there’s no denying that the contrasting colour of the Sash which slowly fades as it goes down the shirt would add a pinch of grace and style to even the most aggressive Sunday league teams. However don’t let this style fool you; this jersey is in no way compensating the lack of quality with its aesthetics. The Sash brags:
- Crew neck with non-restrictive fit
- Sash graphic sublimated on front panel
- Dri-FIT fabric to keep you dry and comfortable
- 100% Dri-FIT polyester.
The Sash jersey is a third generation kit, the next step in the evolution of its ancestor kits if you will. This history is what brings the shirt a certain legacy and depth (yes, I do take football shirts this seriously). I believe that it is this very heritage that makes Nike’s tagline so fitting.
’A fresh take on a classic design’.
As I’m sure you have realised by now, I like an analogy or two. So you might be expecting this blog to take an ‘out with the old and in with the new’ direction, however I’m going to go down the slightly different path of ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, which is the exact approach that Nike has taken when it comes to continuing their previous kits.
Some of Nike’s best selling team wear kits of all time were featured last year and it would be nothing short of cruel to deprive the footballing world of these classic and proven kits that not only won our hearts, but also countless leagues and trophies throughout the country last season.
I think Nike have done well to match the kits to the players modelling them. For example, Ramos’ Striker III is stylish yet forceful, Lewandowski’s Victory II jersey artistic and graceful, and Erikson’s Striped Division jersey is classic yet creative.
All these kits are available in multiple colour schemes to match your club colours.
The kit you wear experiences every high and every low of each season…What will your kit’s story be?
